Got Choir?

Recently a newspaper article from the Orange County Register entitled “Daily dose of choir good for you” came to the attention of our choir, and they would like to share parts of it with you.

IRVINE , Calif. –singing in a choir might just make you healthier, according to a newly publicized study by the University of California , Irvine .

Researchers at the school found increased levels of disease-fighting proteins in the mouths of choir members after they sang Beethoven’s choral masterwork, the Missa Solemnis.

According to the study, levels of Immunoglobulin A, a protein used by the immune system to fight disease, increased 150 percent during rehearsals and 240 percent during performance. The boost seemed directly related to the singers’ states of mind, which many participants described as euphoric.

“The more passionate you feel while singing, the greater the effect”, said education professor Robert Beck, who authored the study with Thomas Cesarino, dean of the university’s College of Medicine.

Researchers attended two rehearsals and a performance of the 160 member Pacific Chorale over eight weeks.......They used cotton swabs to collect saliva, which contains the immune protein, from 32 volunteer choir members, before and after singing, and analyzed the results.

Beck said he became interested in studying choral singing to see if there was a link between the improved immune response to churchgoing and also to music, speculating that the link might be the singing of hymns in church.
He expected to see some increase in immune response but was surprised at its intensity.

Because virtually all the singers tested are long-time choir members, Beck wants to extend his study to see if the same effect exists among new singers.

He was unwilling to predict the outcome for people who sing in the shower.

So, there’s proof – singing with the choir is good for you, body and soul. We’ll save you a seat.......

Take the choir with you. In the rear of the sanctuary are the two remaining tapes of Amen! , the choir’s first recording, our Christmas album All Is Well, and our latest Come, Build a Church. CDs are $15, tapes are $12.
